October 4, 2013: A's 9 Tigers 5 (A's lead series, 1-0)

The Tigers were riding a 1-run lead into the 9th when Derek Norris of the A's led off with a game-tying home run off Drew Smyly. Eric Sogard would follow with a single but get caught stealing, then Coco Crisp lined out for the 2nd out. It looked like the Tigers could get their chance in the bottom of the inning but then Jed Lowrie doubled and Josh Donaldson was intentionally walked. Smyly gave way to Al Abuquerque, who intentionally walked Brandon Moss to get to Yoenis Cespedes, who made it count with a big blast to give the A's a 9-5 lead that became the final score.

The Oakland Athletics came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 9 to
5.

Oakland came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning as they
scored 5 runs on 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Yoenis
Cespedes who silenced Comerica Park as he quieted the crowd by clouting a
Grand Slam. Oakland had a total of 10 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Sean Doolittle(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Drew Smyly(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 3 hits
in 2/3 of an inning.

Smyly was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
