October 8, 2013: Tigers 3 A's 0 (Tigers win series, 3-1)

Doug Fister, Jose Veras, Drew Smyly, Rick Porcello and Joaquin Benoit combined to do what Anibal Sanchez did alone the night before - keep the A's off the scoreboard. The back-to-back whitewashings eliminate the A's and send the Tigers to the ALCS. The Tigers drew first blood in the 4th inning with 3 straight singles, then a 2-run Victor Martinez homer in the 9th put 'em away for good.

The Tigers will await the winner of game 5 in the Orioles-Red Sox series.

The series MVP is Prince Fielder. Although Miguel Cabrera hit .533 in the series, he had just 2 RBI, both on solo homers. Fielder also had 2 HR, but had 7 RBI total, including the first (and deciding) run in game 4.

At O.co Coliseum, the Oakland fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Doug
Fister(1-0) finally bested his Oakland opposite, Dan Straily(0-1), by the
score of 3 to 0.

Fister earned his pay with a solid performance for Detroit. He went 6 innings
surrendering 2 hits and 2 walks. Detroit had 7 hits for the game and Oakland
had 4.

Joaquin Benoit got the save, his 2nd. Straily was the losing pitcher. He
pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits and 1 walk.

October 8, 2013: Orioles 6 Red Sox 5 (series tied, 2-2)

When the Red Sox scored 4 runs in the 1st on a Jonny Gomes grand slam I figured they had punched their ticket to the ALCS and could cruise to the win. Instead the Orioles chipped away with a run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, 2 in the 7th to tie it, and then they load the bases in the 9th and get the walk off single from Matt Weiters. Nate McClouth and Danny Valencia both had 3 hits for the O's.

Scott Feldman will face off against Jon Lester for all the marbles in game 5. Well not all the marbles, but the ones that get them to the ALCS.

Red Sox by a score of 6 to 5 at Camden Yards.

Baltimore scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Nate McLouth slapped a
one-base hit. Franklin Morales then threw a wild pitch. After an out was
recorded, Chris Davis was walked intentionally. Danny Valencia was up next
and he ripped a base-hit to load the bases. Matt Wieters came to the plate
and ripped a single giving Baltimore the win much to the delight of the home
town crowd. Baltimore had 10 hits for the night.

Brian Matusz(1-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Morales(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 3 hits
in 1 and 1/3 innings.

October 7, 2013: Nationals 3 Braves 2 (10) (Nationals win series, 3-1)

The Nationals are the first team to punch their ticket to the League Championship Series, although they needed an extra inning to get the win in game 4. Dan Haren cruised through the first 7 innings but maybe shouldn't have come back out for the 8th, when he ended up giving up 2 runs, although one was unearned.

The Nationals got the tying run in the top of the 10th when Ian Desmond singled to lead off the innimg, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball. Rafael Soriano struck out 2 in a perfect bottom of the 10th to get his 3rd save in as many games.

The series MVP is Soriano, thanks to those three saves.

Dan Haren had a strong outing and Ryan Zimmerman had 2 base hits at Turner
Field where the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves in 10 innings by
the score of 3 to 2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Washington ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. Ian Desmond laced a single. Desmond swiped
second base. Jordan Walden then let loose a wild pitch. Walden then threw a
pitch that got away from the catcher. Adam Laroche came to the plate and
drew a walk. Wilson Ramos struck out, unable to help the rally. Steve
Lombardozzi got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.
Chad Tracy then singled. Denard Span was the next batter, but he struck
out. The Atlanta batters didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the 10th.

The victory was credited to Fernando Abad(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Abad was helped out by Rafael Soriano who recorded his 3rd
save. Walden(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

October 7, 2013: Orioles 5 Red Sox 4 (Red Sox lead series, 2-1)

Chris Davis and Ryan Flaherty each hit 2-run homers off Clay Buchholz, but it is Adam Jones' RBI single in the 7th off an ineffective Brandon Workman that is the difference maker in this one.

Bryce Harper cracked a homer and had 3 RBI and Jordan Zimmermann went 7 solid
innings at Turner Field as the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves
by the count of 4 to 2.

Zimmermann(1-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed 4 hits and no walks in 7
innings. Zimmermann recorded 8 strikeouts. Atlanta had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.

Rafael Soriano gained credit for his 2nd save. Kris Medlen(1-1) was the
loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Fredi Gonzalez was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the
press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

October 5, 2013: Red Sox 9 Orioles 8 (Red Sox lead series, 2-0)

Starter John Lackey gave up seven runs, but the Red Sox still come away with the win in a wild back-and-forth affair. The Sox are the only team to be up 2 games to none in their division series; the other 3 are tied at a game each.

The Sox started out with 2 runs in the first and it looked like they were going to feast on Orioles pitching once again. Instead the Orioles teed off on Lackey, scoring 5 runs in the 2nd off 5 hits, including a 3-run JJ Hardy home run. Will Middlebrooks pulled the Sox back within a run with a solo shot in the 3rd, then added a 2-run shot in the 5th to tie it. A Sox run on on a Stephen Drew RBI double in the 5th gave them a 6-5 lead.

The Orioles weren't done though, and took the lead back in the top of the 6th on a Danny Valencia 2-run homer that chased Lackey from the game. Jarrod Saltalamacchia led off the bottom of the 7th with a ground ball that got past Hardy for an error, and I brought in Quintin Berry to pinch run, needing that tying run. Drew doubled to send Berry to 3rd, Middlebrooks grounded out, but Jacoby Ellsbury came through with a single to score 2 runners and give the Sox the lead again.

The O's still weren't done, and got back-to-back doubles from Matt Weiters and Valencia to tie it up. The Sox had Mike Napoli, David Ross and Berry due up in the bottom of the 8th, and I was starting to regret bringing Berry into the game to replace Daniel Nava in LF, and having Ross take Nava's spot in the lineup while replacing Salty behind the dish. Berry made it all worthwhile though by smacking a solo homer to give the Sox the lead. Koji Uehara took the 9th, and earned the save.

The Oakland Athletics came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 9 to
5.

Oakland came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning as they
scored 5 runs on 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Yoenis
Cespedes who silenced Comerica Park as he quieted the crowd by clouting a
Grand Slam. Oakland had a total of 10 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Sean Doolittle(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Drew Smyly(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 3 hits
in 2/3 of an inning.

Smyly was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

October 4, 2013: Nationals 6 Braves 5 (series tied, 1-1)

Chicks dig the longball. Nationals fans also dig the longball, especially when 5 of them in a game leads to a 6-5 comeback win over the Braves to tie their division series at a game a piece.

The Nats homerfest started in the 1st when Denard Span led off with one. The Braves then roughed up Stephen Strasburg in the top of the 2nd with 5 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks (one intentional), a balk, and an error. The Nats immediately showed they hadn't given up the fight in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back solo homers from Adam Laroche and Wilson Ramos.

Strasburg settled down, and Bryce Harper made it a one-run game with a solo shot in the 5th. The 5-4 score held until the bottom of the 8th, when NL MVP Ian Desmond led off the inning with a single. That brought Braves closer (and NL Cy Young Award winner) Craig Kimbrel out to face Laroche, but instead of shutting the Nats down like he did he game 1, he gave up Laroche's 2nd homer of the day to give the Nats a one run lead. Rafael Soriano got the Braves in the top of the 9th for the save.

First baseman Adam Laroche smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Washington
Nationals bested the Atlanta Braves 6 to 5 at Nationals Park.

Laroche made sure the Washington fans enjoyed themselves. He hit a
bases-empty home run in the 2nd inning and bombed a two-run dinger in the 8th
inning. Atlanta made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.

Craig Stammen(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Stammen got help from Rafael Soriano who earned his 1st save. Craig
Kimbrel(0-1) was the loser in relief.

Fredi Gonzalez was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

October 4, 2013: Red Sox 6 Orioles 1 (Red Sox lead series, 1-0)
