April 21, 2012: Royals 1 Red Sox 0

The Red Sox get shut out for the first time this season, wasting a fine performance from Ryan Dempster. The Royals' lone run came in the 6th on two singles and a sac bunt. The Sox had just 3 hits but did load the bases in the 9th when Royals closer Greg Holland issued three straight 2-out walks, but Mike Napoli failed to take advantage of the potential heroic opportunity, instead striking out for the 4th time on the day.

This was game 1 of a doubleheader. Allen Webster makes his major league debut in the nightcap. He was obtained from the Dodgers in the Adrian Gonzalez deal in late 2012.

April 16, 2013: Red Sox 3 Indians 1

The Red Sox break a 4-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Indians. The most surprising yet encouraging development is the almost effortless 9th inning pitched by Andrew Bailey. He allowed a walk, but struck out two and earned his 2nd save of the season. Perhaps Joel Hanrahan's suckiness was affecting Bailey as well - Hanrahan landed on the DL today, leaving Bailey as the closer for the time being.

The Sox got a run in the top of the 3rd on a David Ross double following a Jonny Gomes single, and scored another run in the 3rd when Rich Hill committed a bases loaded balk. Daniel Nava gave the Sox an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the 9th. Felix Doubront earned the win with 7 innings of work, allowing just one unearned run in the 7th.

April 15, 2013: Rays 6 Red Sox 5

The Red Sox took on the Rays in the annual Patriots Day morning game, and what should have been a story about a comeback win fueled by a bases-loaded double from Will Middlebrooks is instead another sad tale about the Red Sox bullpen.

Andrew Bailey pitched the top of the 9th with a one run lead, and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits. At least he didn't give up a home run! Bailey and Joel Hanrahan have 3 losses and 6 blown saves between them. They have given up 12 homers combined in just 10 1/3 innings of work - 5 in 7 for Bailey, 7 in 3 1/3 for Hanrahan. They account for 60% of the home runs given up by the Red Sox through their first 12 games. They account for 1/3 of the earned runs given up by the Red Sox through their first 12 games.

I'm trying to hold out before the eventual change to Koji Uehara at closer, but these assbags are making it difficult!

In a dramatic ending the Tampa Bay Rays staged a comeback and held on to win
over the Boston Red Sox by the count of 6 to 5.

Tampa Bay came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2
runs using 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Desmond Jennings was the
sparkplug when he stroked a base-hit. Ben Zobrist came next and he doubled.
Evan Longoria then lined a one-base hit. One out later, Ryan Roberts stepped
up to the plate and he delivered a single. James Loney was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. Neither team was able to score until the 6th
inning.

The win was credited to Joel Peralta(1-0) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing
no runs. Peralta got help from Jamey Wright who earned his 1st save. Andrew
Bailey(0-2) was given the loss in relief.

Joe Maddon was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win it
in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the
fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win this afternoon!'

April 10, 2013: Red Sox 8 Orioles 5 (16)

Joel Hanrahan again is no relief for the Sox, blowing a 2 run lead by allowing 2 home runs in the top of the 9th. The tie score goes all the way until the 16th, when Mike Napoli finally settles it with a big fly with 2 runners on. Napoli and Will Middlebrooks had missed an opportunity two innings earlier, when they were the 2nd and 3rd out of the inning with the winning runner on 3rd. The Orioles also had a runner on 3rd with one out in the top of the 14th, but Clayton Mortensen worked out of it to cap his clutch 3 2/3 innings of work. Felix Doubront works a couple innings in between starts and earns the win.

Center fielder Colby Rasmus rocketed 2 homeruns at Rogers Centre as the Boston
Red Sox lost a heartbreaker to Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 6 to
4.

Toronto won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs. After an out
was recorded, Melky Cabrera started the rally when he drew a walk. Edwin
Encarnacion stepped into the batter's box and he clubbed a two-run home run
making Toronto the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.
Toronto had 10 hits for the night.

The victory went to Jeremy Jeffress(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing
no runs. Andrew Miller(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of
an inning giving up no hits and 2 walks.

April 4, 2013: Yankees 6 Red Sox 4

Well that didn't go according to plan. New Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan gets his first save opportunity, and he quickly loads the bases on a single and 2 walks. A failed sac fly with a runner thrown out at the plate gave him two outs, but he walked another batter to load the bases again, followed by perhaps the worst possible thing to happen for Red Sox fans - a walk-off grand slam, by a Yankee, in Yankee Stadium, where that Yankee is former Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis.

Mike Napoli had a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th off Mariano Rivera that gave the Sox the lead. It was his 2nd of the game and his 4th of the young season. Ryan Dempster had a quality start but didn't figure in the decision.

April 3, 2013: Red Sox 12 Yankees 0

The 2013 Red Sox definitely look like a different team than the 2012 version. Today they whip the Yankees 12-0 behind 6 home runs and 7 innings of 2-hit ball from Clay Buchholz. Mike Napoli got his first 2 home runs in a Red Sox uniform, Shane Victorino got his 2nd in as many days, Daniel Nava was 3 for 4 with a homer and 3 runs scored, Jacoby Ellsbury was 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored, and both Dustin Pedroia and Jarrod Saltalamacchia went deep. Even Alfredo Aceves looks improved from his 2012 form - he pitched 2 innings without allowing a run!

First baseman Mike Napoli knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Yankee Stadium
as the Boston Red Sox embarrassed the New York (AL) Yankees by the lopsided
score of 12 to 0.

Napoli had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in
the 6th inning and smacked a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Overall
Boston out-hit New York (AL) 16 to 3.

Clay Buchholz(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 7 innings. Hiroki
Kuroda(0-1) was the loser. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5 innings of
work.

April 1, 2013: Nationals beat Marlins, 8-7 on Opening Day at Nationals Park

Denard Span makes his Nationals debut count with an RBI single in the 8th that ends up being the winning hit in a wild back-and-forth game. Nats starter Stephen Strasburg allowed 8 hits and 3 runs over 5, but was sitting on a 3-run lead when he left the game. The lead was quickly erased by the Marlins' 4-run 7th. The Nats tied it in the bottom of the inning, also on a Span single.

Rafael Soriano also had a solid Nats debut for the save. Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen were battling for the closer spot at the end of last season, now they both line up behind Soriano.

The Washington Nationals nipped the Miami Marlins 8 to 7 at Nationals Park in
a hard fought contest.

The deciding run was scored by Washington in the 8th. After an out was
recorded, Danny Espinosa slapped a base-hit. Wilson Ramos was next and he
laced a single. Denard Span then ripped a base-hit. After another out,
Jayson Werth came to bat and was walked intentionally to load the bases. A
wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

The winning pitcher was Craig Stammen(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Rafael Soriano earned the save, his 1st. A.J. Ramos(0-1) was hit with the
loss in relief.

April 1, 2013: Red Sox win opener 8-1 in the Bronx

The Red Sox hope that the offseason has a reversal of their 2012 season, which saw them go from first to last in the division as the season progressed to ultimately finish 12 games under .500.

To that end, there are four new faces in the starting lineup: Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes and Jackie Bradley Jr. All but Bradley were free agent signees. Victorino endeared himself to Red Sox Nation right away with a 1st inning homer, and ended up 2 for 5 on the day with 3 RBI. Napoli was 0 for 4 but scored a run, and Gomes was 1 for 5 with an RBI. Bradley had a less fortunate day - he was 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts!

The real story for the Sox is Jose Iglesias, who suffered through a terrible September 2012 but is still the opening day shortstop for the Sox. He repays that allegiance with a 2 for 3 day, including a home run and 3 runs scored. The 2 hits in 3 AB is as many as he had in 69 AB in 2012!

Jon Lester went 7 easy innings for the win. New face Koji Uehara pitched the 8th, while Andrew Bailey took the 9th with the big lead. Bailey is essentially the incumbent closer but the Sox signed Joel Hanrahan in the offseason to fill the role. Hindsight tells me that the role went from Hanrahan to Bailey to Junichi Tazawa to Uehara, we'll see how it works in my replay!
