2013 AL MVP: Chris Davis, Baltimore Orioles (.298/57/121)
Davis' 57 HR absolutely crushed the competition, as he was 6 ahead of 2nd place in the AL (Mark Trumbo of the Angels) and 21 ahead of NL leader Hunter Pence of the Giants. Davis' 121 RBI was 2nd in the AL. His bat helped the Orioles make the playoffs for the first time in my 13 years of replays. 2nd place is perennial contender Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers (.369/48/119), who won the batting crown and was 3rd in both HR and RBI. 3rd place goes to Cabrera's teammate Max Scherzer (20-6, 2.36, 289 K), who was the AL's only 20 game winner, led the league in strikeouts, and was 2nd in ERA. 4th and 5th belong to a pair of teammates: Dustin Pedroia (.321/19/116) and David Ortiz (.334/33/124) of the Red Sox. Pedroia led the league in hits and runs scored, was 5th in average and 4th in RBI. Ortiz led in RBI, was 3rd in average, and 7th in HR.
2013 AL Cy Young: Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (20-6, 2.36, 289 K)
I already touted Scherzer's stats above when describing his 3rd place MVP finish. 2nd is last year's winner Yu Darvish of the Rangers (17-4, 2.75, 266 K) Darvish had one less win, a slightly higher ERA but more K's than in 2012. He was 5th in ERA and 2nd to Scherzer in K's. 3rd belongs to Darvish's teammate Joe Nathan (2-2, 1.89, 43 SV). Nathan's 43 saves were actually 5th in the AL. There was a 3-way tie for the saves lead in the AL at 47, belonging to Jim Johnson of the Orioles, Grant Balfour of the A's, and Fernando Rodney of the Rays. 4th place in both saves and in the AL Cy Young voting is Greg Holland of the Royals (1-1, 1.01, 45 SV), while 5th place in Cy voting belongs to Jarrod Parker of the A's (16-2, 2.18, 128 K), who led the league in ERA and was tied for 6th in wins.
2013 AL Manager of the Year: John Farrell, Boston Red Sox
Manager of the year typically goes to the manager of the team with the best record, and this year is no exception. It is Farrell's first win in his first year managing the Red Sox.
