The Boston Red Sox are World Series Champions!

October 30, 2013 - The Red Sox are World Champions for the fourth time in my 13 year SOM replay history, matching their real-life 2013 World Series win over the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the Nationals instead of the Cardinals, but the outcome was the same - Red Sox in 6.

The Game 6 win was not as close as the final score suggests. The Sox took the lead in the 1st on 3 runs, as Nats starter Gio Gonzalez struggled out of the gate by giving up a single and 3 straight walks to start the game. He briefly righted the ship with 2 strikeouts, but a bases loaded double from David Ross made it 3-0. The Sox got 2 more singles and a Dustin Pedroia sac fly in the 2nd to make it 4-0. Jake Peavy was putting up donuts through 6 innings, and the death blow came in the 7th when the Sox plated 3 more runs with an RBI single from Stephen Drew, another double from Ross, and a fielder's choice ground out from Will Middlebrooks.

Peavy gave way to Ryan Dempster with a 7-0 lead, and Dempster gave up 2 runs in the 7th on a Bryce Harper double following two walks and a hit batsman. The Nats rallied more against Dempster in the 8th, with Anthony Rendon and Steve Lombardozzi singling in advance of a Denard Span 3-run homer. With the tying run on deck, that brought in Junichi Tazawa to get the last 2 outs of the 8th with strikeouts of Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth, and Koji Uehara put 'em down 1-2-3 in the 9th, including strikeouts of Harper and lefty slugger Adam Laroche.

The Nats had a big missed opportunity in the 3rd when Laroche struck out to end the inning with the bases loaded. The close final score implies that a big hit there could have made the difference, although if the game were closer Dempster either wouldn't have come in or certainly wouldn't have been left in long enough to cough up 5 runs.

In the end, the Red Sox offense was too much for the Nats to handle in this year's edition of the Fall Classic. The Sox hit .290 for the series and scored 3 runs in the 1st inning in 3 of their wins (Games 3, 5 and 6).

The World Series MVP is Uehara, who was perfect in all 3 of his appearances in the series. Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava also deserve recognition, as both hit .421. Napoli, Dustin Pedroia and Shane Victorino all scored 5 runs in the series, while Pedroia led with 5 RBI. It's clear that the offense was balanced and consistently potent!

David Ross hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox topped the
Washington Nationals by a score of 7 to 5 at Nationals Park.

Boston started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first plating 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Jacoby Ellsbury kicked off the
action when he stroked a single. Shane Victorino came next and he drew a
walk. Dustin Pedroia then drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Napoli
followed and he drew a walk. Jonny Gomes was next to bat, but he was a
strikeout victim. Stephen Drew struck out, unable to help the rally. Ross
next to the plate and he doubled. Will Middlebrooks was a strikeout victim,
unable to help out. Washington was retired without difficulty in the bottom
of the 9th.

The victory was credited to Jake Peavy(2-1) who went 6 innings, allowing no
runs. Koji Uehara gained credit for his 5th save. Gio Gonzalez(2-3) absorbed
the loss. Although losing the contest, he whiffed 8 batters in 5 and 1/3
innings.

October 28, 2013: Red Sox 5 Nationals 4 (Red Sox lead World Series, 3-2)

The Red Sox are one win away from a world championship following a 5-4 win over the Nationals in game 5. The Red Sox struck early with 3 runs in the 1st, led by doubles from Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Napoli, and a huge 2 RBI single from Daniel Nava. Napoli made it 4-0 with a solo homer in the 4th.

Clay Buchholz was cruising along but then the wheels came off in the 6th, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk. Ian Desmond's 2 RBI double ended the day for Buchholz, but Craig Breslow was able to get Adam Laroche to line out with the go ahead run on 2nd to end the inning tied at 4.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Sox struck back with a double from Napoli, a single from Nava, and a double from Jarrod Saltalamacchia that made it 5-4 Sox. Junichi Tazawa struck out Ryan Zimmerman with the tying run on 3rd to end the 7th, survived the 8th, and gave to ball to Koji Uehara for the 1-2-3 9th.

Game 6 returns to Washington, where Gio Gonzalez will face Jake Peavy. If Game 7 is necessary, Stephen Strasburg hosts Jon Lester.

The hot series from Mike Napoli and the lefty starter Gonzalez probably means that David Ortiz sits to start in the NL park.

October 27, 2013: Nationals 3 Red Sox 2 (World Series tied, 2-2)

The 2013 World Series has been reduced to a best of 3 affair, as the Nationals tie the series up by edging the Red Sox 3-2 in Game 4. Despite the close score, the Nationals actually never trailed in this game, scoring in the 1st on a Denard Span double that turned into a run after Ian Desmond's RBI single. The Nats added 2 more in the 4th on 3 hits, including RBI singles from Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon. The Sox got 2 back in the bottom of the 4th on 4 hits, including a Jarrod Saltalamacchia bases-loaded double.

October 26, 2013: Red Sox 7 Nationals 3 (Red Sox lead World Series, 2-1)

The Red Sox needed to call on closer Koji Uehara in the 8th to quell the Nationals late rally, then scored 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th for the final 7-3 score. Uehara entered the game with the tying run on 1st and the go-ahead run at the plate, but got Wilson Ramos to fly out to end the inning.

The Sox first got on the board in the 1st on a 3-run home run from David Ortiz. They added a run in the 3rd on back-to-back doubles from Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava, and another in the 4th on a Will Middlebrooks solo homer. The Nats finally got on the board in the 7th when Scott Hairston went deep with a runner on in his first start of the playoffs, filling the DH spot against the lefty Jon Lester. That homer facilitated Lester's exit from the game after 7 strong innings.

October 24, 2013: Nationals 9 Red Sox 4 (World Series tied, 1-1)

The Red Sox scored 3 runs in the 1st inning on a Dustin Pedroia double and a Jonny Gomes home run, and it looked like it was going to be another game that was all Red Sox. Instead, the Nationals formidable offense came to life in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs and going on to score in 4 more innings en route to a 9-4 win. Bryce Harper had a bases loaded double that plated 3 in the 4th, and Wilson Ramos hit solo homers in the 4th and 6th.

Gio Gonzalez got the win with a quality start. The series goes to Boston for game 3, where David Ortiz will resume his normal DH role, and Stephen Strasburg will take the hill against Jon Lester of the Sox.

October 23, 2013: Red Sox 8 Nationals 0 (Red Sox lead World Series, 1-0)

Game 1 of the 2013 World Series is all Red Sox. The Sox were the first team to get on the board in the 4th on a Shane Victorino solo homer, then they busted it open in the 6th with 6 runs. 5 of the first 6 batters in the inning got hits, chasing Nationals started Jordan Zimmermann from the game. 3 runs were in at that point, and Ian Krol allowed 2 more hits than scored 3 more runs. Clay Buchholz even had an RBI single in the inning, his 2nd single of the game! Of course Buchholz really lead the team from the mound, pitching 7 shutout innings. The Washington Nationals endured an embarrassing pasting as a potent Boston
Red Sox lineup tallied 8 runs while Clay Buchholz(1-0)with bullpen support
contained Washington.

In the top of the 4th inning Boston went on top for good scoring a single run.
Boston ended up with 15 hits for the game while Washington had 5.

The losing pitcher was Jordan Zimmermann(2-1). By giving up 6 runs in 5 and
1/3 innings his ERA increased from 3.00 to 5.19.

October 20, 2013: Red Sox 2 Tigers 1 (10) (Red Sox win ALCS, 4-3)

It doesn't get any more exciting than this. Game 7 of the 2013 American League Championship Series needed extra innings to settle the score, and it is the Red Sox that come out on top over the Tigers in 10.

The winning run came about when Stephen Drew singled, Quintin Berry pinch ran, and Will Middlebrooks ripped a double on a hit and run play where Berry scored easily. Middlebrooks hasn't contributed much with his bat in the playoffs, but picked a good time to get his first hit of the series!

The Red Sox scored their 1st run in the 1st inning on a Mike Napoli RBI double following singles from Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz. The Tigers scored their lone run on a Miguel Cabrera home run, of course. Cabrera's 9 HR in the series is easily a record for a playoff series. The Tigers scored 30 runs in the series, and Cabrera knocked in more than half (16).

Stephen Drew knocked in 9 of the Red Sox' 31 runs in the series, and led the team with 3 HR in the series, but my MVP is Koji Uehara. Koji entered this game in the 9th with runners on 1st and 2nd. He struck out Jhonny Peralta and got Omar Infante to ground out to end the threat, then kept 'em scoreless in the 10th.

The World Series starts on the 23rd between the Red Sox and Nationals. Clay Buchholz gets the game 1 start vs. Jordan Zimmermann of the Nats. The series is a rematch of my 2002 World Series, where the Sox beat the Expos in 5 games. The Red Sox most recent trip to one of my replay Series was their 2009 win, while the Nats were 2011 champions. The two teams did not meet in the regular season in 2013. The Nats swept the Sox in 2012, although that was not a very good Sox team.

The Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers locked up in an exciting one-run
game at Fenway Park. The final score was the Boston Red Sox 2, the Detroit
Tigers 1 in 10 innings.

Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston was
victorious in the 10th inning. Stephen Drew laced a base-knock. Will
Middlebrooks came next and he doubled giving Boston the win and sending the
home town fans into a frenzy. Boston rapped out 7 hits for the night.

Koji Uehara(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The
losing pitcher was Drew Smyly(0-2) in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in
2 innings.

October 19, 2013: Tigers 5 Red Sox 3 (ALCS tied, 3-3)

The Tigers stay alive and force a game 7 in the ALCS. The Tigers bats were alive early, with 3 singles in the 1st and two singles, a double, and a home run that led to 4 runs in the 2nd. Not surprisingly, the home run belongs to Miguel Cabrera, who now has 8 in the series. Austin Jackson added an insurance run with a solo shot in the 7th.

The Red Sox almost rallied, getting 2 runs in the 9th on a Mike Carp pinch hit HR, and loading the bases before Mike Napoli struck out to end the game. Napoli was 3 for 3 prior to that at bat.

It will be Jon Lester vs. Anibal Sanchez in the deciding game 7.

October 18, 2013: Nationals 3 Cardinals 2 (Nationals win NLCS, 4-2)

The Washington Nationals are going to the World Series for the 2nd time in 3 years after dispatching the Cardinals in a 3-2 Game 6 win. The Nats got on the board early with a run in the 1st on a Denard Span single, a Ryan Zimmerman double, and a groundball out off the bat of Jayson Werth. They added 2 more in the 6th when Bryce Harper walked and 2 batters later the bases were cleared by an Adam Laroche home run. Those 2 extra runs proved necessary as the Cardinals scored in both the 8th and 9th, but couldn't get that third run. The Cards missed a golden opportunity in the 8th when Matt Holiday ended the inning with a 1-17 HR where the split came up a 19.

The series MVP is Laroche, who hit .350 in the series and led the team with 8 RBI.

The Nats will await the winner of the ALCS, where the Red Sox currently lead the Tigers 3 games to 2. The Nats have home field advantage thanks to the NL's 6-1 All Star Game victory. The winning pitcher in that game? Stephen Strasburg, who won today and won in game 2. He will likely start game 3 of the World Series, with Jordan Zimmermann getting the game 1 start and Gio Gonzalez getting the call for game 2.

the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to
2.

St. Louis found themselves trailing quickly as the Washington bats came
through in the first inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. St. Louis had
a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Strasburg(2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 7 innings. Rafael Soriano
gained credit for his 5th save. Joe Kelly(1-2) was charged with the loss.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Davey Johnson said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'

The Tigers prove they aren't going down without a fight. They were losing 4-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, but score 2 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to tie it up, before winning the game on an Omar Infante walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th. In the 7th they got a Prince Fielder walk followed by back-to-back singled from Victor Martinez and Alex Avila, while in the 8th Miguel Cabrera went deep for his 7th HR of the ALCS and his 9th of the playoffs, both records as far as I can tell.

In the 119th, Fielder singled and Avila walked, but there were 2 outs when Infante came up and won the game off Brandon Workman.

The series returns to Fenway Park for game 6, and John Lackey will try to take it home for the Sox, while Justin Verlander will try to send it to game 7.

Miguel Cabrera jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at Comerica Park
where the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Detroit won the hard fought
contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Prince Fielder
delivered a one-base hit. One out later, Alex Avila stepped in and he drew a
walk. Omar Infante then slapped a single resulting in an exciting win for
Detroit and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. For the
game Detroit out-hit Boston 12 to 8.

The win was credited to Joaquin Benoit(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings
allowing no runs. Brandon Workman(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief.

October 16, 2013: Nationals 7 Cardinals 2 (Nationals lead NLCS, 3-2)

The Nationals put up crooked numbers in three separate innings, and Gio Gonzalez pitches 7 innings of 2-hit ball to lead the Nats to a win in game 5 of the NLCS. The Nats are now one win from the World Series and have their most consistent starter from the regular season, Stephen Strasburg, ready to take the hill in game 6.

Bryce Harper had 3 hits, including a 9th inning double that plated two. The Nats broke it open in the 8th when they started the inning with five straight singles from Ryan Zimmerman down on through Adam Laroche in the lineup.

October 16, 2013: Red Sox 10 Tigers 2 (Red Sox lead ALCS, 3-1)

The Red Sox beat up on the Tigers and are just one game away from the World Series. The Sox scored in every inning except the 1st and 3rd. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was 4 for 5 with two doubles, and Dustin Pedroia had 3 hits including a double. Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first homer of the playoffs.

Jake Peavy got the win and Koji Uehara pitched the 9th despite the 8-run lead. Miguel Cabrera accounted for both Detroit runs and is having a monster series despite his team being down 3-1. Cabrera is hitting .563 with 6 HR and 10 RBI. 6 HR is actually a record as far as I can tell, some quick research reveals a number of players who have hit 5 HR in a playoff series but none with 6. Cabrera's 8 HR thus far in the playoffs would tie a record held in real life by Barry Bonds (2002), Nelson Cruz (2011) and Carlos Beltran (2004).

Game 5 will feature a rematch of game 1 starters - Clay Buchholz vs. Max Scherzer. The Sox won that one by a run; Scherzer took the loss.

October 15, 2013: Cardinals 6 Nationals 0 (NLCS tied, 2-2)

Michael Wacha showed the poise of a seasoned veteran in his 2nd playoff start and just his 11th start in the majors, hurling a 4-hit shutout at the Nationals to even up the NLCS. The Cards poured it on in a 5-run 7th, but really only needed the single run scored in the 5th on a Carlos Beltran RBI double.

Drew Storen goes from hero a day earlier to goat. He allowed two singles and issued 2 walks without recording an out, and all four runners came around to score.

Michael Wacha had an impressive outing and Matt Carpenter had 3 base hits as
the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals by a score of 6 to
0.

Washington never recovered after St. Louis took the lead in the 5th inning
scoring a single run using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Wacha drew a
walk. Carpenter was next and he slapped a single. Carlos Beltran then
doubled. St. Louis had a total of 11 hits for the game.

Wacha(2-0) went the distance for the shutout. Dan Haren(0-1) was hit with the
loss. 'When Wacha is on like that it is a tough game to play, no doubt about
it,' Davey Johnson said. 'He always pitches well against us.'

October 15, 2013: Tigers 11 Red Sox 4 (Red Sox lead ALCS, 2-1)

The ALCS moves to Detroit for game 3, and the Tigers offense comes roaring back in an 11-4 win. Miguel Cabrera had a huge day, hitting 3 HR and knocking in 5 runs. The Tigers set the pace early with 4 runs in the 1st off Jon Lester, including back to back homers from Cabrera and Prince Fielder.  The Sox offense showed some life late, but it was too little too late.

Miguel Cabrera blasted 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Anibal Sanchez mowed down
10 Boston batters as the Detroit Tigers topped the Boston Red Sox by a score
of 11 to 4 at Comerica Park.

Cabrera enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He clubbed a two-run home run in
the 1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning and lifted one
out of the park for a two run home run in the 6th inning. Detroit finished
with 14 hits in the victory.

Sanchez(2-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Jon Lester(2-1)
ended up with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 3 and 1/3 innings of work.

The Detroit fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Sanchez, but it
was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10
strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Jim
Leyland said following the game.
