The Red Sox got on the board early off AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, scoring a run when Shane Victorino singled, advanced to 2nd when Dustin Pedroia was hit by a pitch, moved to 3rd on a fly out, then scored on a Mike Carp single. The Tigers took the lead with 3 in the 3rd with doubles from Don Kelly, Austin Jackson and Miguel Cabrera.
The lead held until the 5th, when Stephen Drew continued his heroics from game 5 of the ALDS with another 2-run shot to tie the game. The Sox took the lead in the bottom of the 7th thanks to a series of miscues from the Tigers. Daniel Nava got on base on an error from Omar Infante, then moved to 2nd and to 3rd on wild pitches from Scherzer. Quintin Berry took over at 3rd for Nava, Drew Smyly replaced Scherzer, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out. Drew was the next batter and he didn't hit a big fly, but he hit a sac fly that scored Berry with the go-ahead run.
Felix Doubront stayed in the game for the 8th and walked the first 2 batters, then got the next 2 outs, then walked Jhonny Peralta to load 'em up. This meant Koji Time, and Uehara got a ground out from Brayan Pena to end the threat. Koji did allow a baserunner in the 9th, but struck out Torii Hunter to end the game with Cabrera on deck.
John Lackey gets Justin Verlander in game 2. I'm hoping Verlander will return to his old history of disappointing playoff starts. The Red Sox and Cardinals are both 1 game closer to recreating the real life 2013 World Series.

The Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers locked up in an exciting one-run
game at Fenway Park. The final score was the Boston Red Sox 4, the Detroit
Tigers 3.
Boston jumped on top of Detroit in the bottom of the 7th inning plating an
isolated run. Daniel Nava reached on an error. Max Scherzer then had one
get away for a wild pitch. Scherzer then let loose a wild pitch. Jarrod
Saltalamacchia got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Stephen
Drew came to the plate and hit a deep fly. Detroit threatened in the 9th but
Boston was able to put down the rally.
Felix Doubront(1-0) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Koji
Uehara earned the save, his 2nd. Scherzer(0-1) absorbed the loss. When
questioned about the loss, Jim Leyland said, 'The fans got to see an exciting
game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this
time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
